Yuletide 2018 Letter

 HAVE FUN GUYS
I'm gonna have fun this year.  I took a few years off but wooooooo.
---------

Please enjoy writing. I wrote a lot down here, and a bit of it's rambly.  And copied from two years ago.  All of my requests have wiggle room in them, which is on purpose. I'd rather you enjoy writing - and not get locked into a really specific time or place setting in a fandom if I can help it - since this is a gift.

Generalities:
Yuletide is great.  I believe it is a sense of general creativity throughout and beyond big fandom.  I do not generally get involved in any meta stuff, and I'm not as prolific as I used to be under other names.

I believe that the muse strikes sometimes in ways we cannot expect, especially with people we don't know well.  As such, I say that I bow to your knowledge of what you are comfortable writing and what your strengths and weaknesses are.  If you are inspired in a way I did not anticipate, go for it!

I really appreciate quality over quantity.  I'd be happier with a good, strong short piece than a rambling (whoops) one that is really long.  I'm a huge short-story reader and I can love a novella and a three-page piece that makes me stop and think or gasp or visualize.

Ratings:  I have pretty high tolerances for both smut and violence but I'm a big fan myself of the 'fade to black' technique to let the imagination fill in, so if that's how you work, I get it.  If you do want to write smut, I've put some notes below all the other notes.

If you're like 'Ugh, this Marsh, not my thing at all,' I get that too.  I'm a big fan of pulpy fiction and set building and environments; two of them lend themselves to messing with the fourth wall if that's your thing.

Silicon Valley (HBO):
Okay, so, I forgot Yuletide was a  thing AGAIN this year until I was reminded.  So I didn't submit characters.  Because I'd put my boy Gilfoyle front and center.  That said, Jared's mystery backstory is awesome - although is it more awesome unrevealed?  I don't know.  Have them bro out!  Have them compare philosophies!
Oh, and here's a link to a favorite the deleted scene: https://www.reddit.com/r/SiliconValleyHBO/comments/4w2p4z/new_deleted_scene_of_jared_and_gilfoyle_in_the/

Cthulhu Mythos: Nyarlathotep:
I'm really into ceremony and environment; with Nyarlathotep as a character, I prefer the Egyptian human-looking incarnation, or the god as Randolph Carter sees him in 'The Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath'.    Again, purple prose, even psychedelic prose would be interesting if you're up to it.  Played more straight, putting him in a modern (post 9/11?) setting or a cyberpunk or Ancient Near East are all possibilities I'm particularly fond of.

Hello From the Magic Tavern:
Before Arnie?  Chunt's upcoming nuptials?  Possibilities are endless.  This is my 'go have fun' choice, so go have fun!

(Sponsor copy optional.)

---

IF YOU WRITE SMUT:
Do not feel obligated to write anything smutty!  'Fade to black' is cool, as are beautiful descriptions of non-sexual things.  But if you do want to...
I enjoy some of the 'grey area' kinks, like questionable consent or non-con, sharp things, and blood play. I enjoy both physical and psychological aspects of D/s, but not lifestyle D/s fic.

Specific things I'm not into: Genderswap, pregnancy (normal, magical, whatever, not my thing), vore, piercings, excretia, underage or large age differences (technical age differences OK in the supernatural realm), incest or pseudo-incest.

Medical themes are tricky for me: anything simulates real-life hospital/caregiving will probably weird me out because of my real life job, but creepy experiments are A+.  If you do want to go this way, I'd recommend popping the specifics to me via the people who intercede between Santa and Recipients

Actually, kind of the same as the above.  If you want to do non-standard writing, I think this is the one.

Silicon Valley (HBO):
Okay.  This is the only one I even suggested a pairing.  If you want to add Tara in, too, and/or any random hookups Jared has, feel free!  Or don't!  Have them bro out!  Have them compare philosophies!  In that vein, though, I should warn you upfront that I am also a LaVeyan Satanist (although without theistic tendencies).  The show and Gilfoyle's portrayals are both not too far off reality, except for his drug use.  We don't dig illicits.

Dear Yuletide Santa 2013 clarification comments

For the first time ever, I wasn't thorough enough!  Brain was a little wonky and I was out of the country for a bit, so it was a bit delayed but here it is....

In your notes about smut (for the fandoms where you want it), you don't say if you prefer het or slash or are happy with both?

I slightly prefer slash (f/f or m/m) over het but I like both.   (whoops silly queer Marsh forgets about gender when people have nice hair.)

Do you like crossovers? If so, do you prefer it to be plausibly set up or just random? Do you like Welcome To The Night Vale as a crossover fandom?

I actually would refer my writer to what I wrote last year (Solvency)  The idea there was that it was a hint of Lovecraft in the Black Books fandom.  These two don't cross over at all, but it's plausible in that  the 'cross over' part relies on the fictional books from Lovecraft's (& circle's) writings that were borrowed among writers for atmosphere and plot points and so on.  WTNV is AWESOME but it's a huuuge fandom and I don't necessarily want to alienate anyone reading it for whichever YT primary fandom is.  I guess what I'm saying is I like the idea of hints, but a full on crossover gives me some ethical wobblies.  Blaming Strexcorp for, well, anything, or that Franchia or Night Vale are visitable (or secret!  government conspiracy!) places are cool.

Go Right Ahead exception: If you're doing the Lovecraft prompt, OH YEAH GO AHEAD AND CROSS THAT OVER.

Do you like AUs to explore changes to explore how small changes can change things?
I like that kind of AU; I prefer alternate history stuff to changing a setting or species or gender.  (eg, Homestuck with trolls reimagined as humans is not my thing, but 'what if an event never happened' expansions can be cool and are more interesting, IMO.)

Yuletide 2013: dear author

This is my final revision - I had a placeholder, then a letter I typed on my phone while at work, and now this one.  Sorry for the delay!  I worked a bunch of long overnight shifts and there's no DW access there.

Please enjoy writing. I wrote a lot down here, and a bit of it's rambly.

I really appreciate quality over quantity.  I'd be happier with a good, strong short piece than a rambling one that is really long.  I'm a huge short-story reader and I can love a novella and a three-page piece that makes me stop and think or gasp or visualize.

If you're like 'Ugh, this Marsh, not my thing at all,' I get that too.  I'm a big fan of pulpy fiction and set building and environments, as detailed below (and evident by my choices, really.)

Request 1: Ghost B.C. (Band) - Fandom
Characters: Papa Emeritus II, a Nameless Ghoul
This is a very small band fandom.  There is some raunchy stuff on Tumblr but it occasionally just gets removed.  Here's the deal: I love the cheesy, fake Satanic occult rock thing.  The costumes, the leering, the sets, the droning music.  I'd prefer a fix set in the world presumed by such a thing existing, dark and serious and everything the 1980s Satanic panic was about. There doesn't have to have sex or gore but a sense of doom or of utter hedonism would be ideal.

Request 2: Motorcity
I have no real specific request for this.  The whole world, the setting, the crapsack and utopian worlds, ugh, they begged for a more mature setting than Disney could give them.  I'd love just worldbuilding or day in the life of a character from any subgroup or caste.  A treatment of how religion changes is one thing I've contemplated, among other things about how society changes when it goes through such a hugh shock.  Of course, optional bonus points for the Duke being skeevy.  Or just being himself.  Same thing.  Purple prose welcome with worldbuilding.

Request 3: Cthulhu Mythos - H. P. Lovecraft
Character: Nyarlathotep
Again, I'm really into ceremony and environment; with Nyarlathotep as a character, I prefer the Egyptian human-looking incarnation, or the god as Randolph Carter sees him in 'The Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath'.    Again, purple prose, even psychedelic prose would be interesting if you're up to it.  Played more straight, putting him in a modern (post 9/11?) setting or a cyberpunk or Ancient Near East are all possibilities I'm particularly fond of.

Request 4: Political RPF - US 21st c.
Character: Julian Assange

This is the one request that I'd actually prefer no smut, versus a more 'anything goes' approach for the others.  This is a tricky sort of thing in that I never really wanted RPF because I thought it was kind of creepy.  But the world presented us with a man who is almost too much to be real, such an antihero or villain depending on one's POV.  A such, I'd kind of prefer a less real setting, a more obviously fictionalized one.  Sci-fi ala Gibson/Stephenson, or even weird fiction?  Go for it.

Sorry about this.  You know, if you have a good idea, just go for it.  Know that in my heart as long a you treat his beautiful, undyed hair well, I'll be happy.

Thank you again, dear author.  Let the mind percolate well.

So you want to write porn... )

Yuletide 2012 Letter

Please enjoy writing. I wrote a lot down here, and a bit of it's rambly. All three of my requests have wiggle room in them, which is on purpose. I'd rather you enjoy writing - and not get locked into a really specific time or place setting in a fandom if I can help it - since this is a gift.

I've left the rating up to you - you can write as explicit or gen as you like (although some are more plausible than others.)

For All Requests:

Motorcity
The Duke of Detroit
Any rating

"I would love The Duke skeeving on any of the Burners, but him being all possessive over anyone or anything is delicious as well."

Every once in a while, I'll read something or watch something and I just get allllll into one character.  I was kind of digging Motorcity - mostly because my friend-with-benefits said it was good - and then this guy showed up.  He's got this delightfully Luciferian sort of lawful-evil personality, 'better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven' concept and that is my most favorite type ever.  The undercurrent of 'what he wants, he gets' is ripe with potential.  So what, or who, is it?  And what does he do to try to get it?  He can, of course, fail...and another option is to explore what happens then, after his graceful public acceptance of defeat.

Request 2
Candle Cove
Rating: any w/r/t violence but I'd prefer no sex involved.

"Meta, non-meta, don't care. Creep me out the way it does, subtle and familiar."

I'd love an episode, although I'd prefer prose rather than a screenplay or chat-log discussion.
Or is it real?  Like, real-real, not just a show?  What made the Cove?  How did the beings there end up there?   Is there some sort of Lovecraftian vibe going on?
Alternately, how did the show affect someone, or a group of kids?
I'd like to explore the dark-madness sort of vibe of this, but I can't really find a great direction to point you in.

Request 3
Choice of Broadsides
Rating: any
Captain Villeneuve (Choice of Broadsides) Female Protagonist (Choice of Broadsides)
"The women here aren't frail little flowers. Write them strong and, if you can, funny. Gen or romance are fine. Vascillating between 'I love you!/I hate you!' is also delicious."

(The last part is totally influenced by my Homestuck experiences, I admit.)
I don't have much experience with this genre of writing, the whole Aubrey-Maturin.series, and I don't necessarily have any associations or preferences.  (Or, uh, much knowledge of ships, or French, or protocol.)  I do like the idea of an alternative reality with strong women who are the ones considered more appropriate for this sort of lifestyle.  I think I'd like something regarding protocol and formality and if that formality happens to fall off in private quarters, it can, either as honest friendship or something more.  I really could go either way with this.

Special notes:
If you do write erotic-type content:
I enjoy some of the 'grey area' kinks, like questionable consent or non-con, sharp things, and blood play. I enjoy both physical and psychological aspects of D/s, but not lifestyle D/s fic.    Specific things I'm not into: Genderswap, pregnancy (normal, magical, whatever, not my thing), vore, piercings, excretia.

I will make sure anonymous commenting is on for this post in case you have questions about anything.

FINALLY:
A great thank you for doing Yuletide. I know it can be rough trying to get into someone's head and write something they'll like while enjoying the writing yourself. I've had years where my assignment was boring; I've had years where my recipient vanished; I've had some good ones, too. (I've changed handles, which is why you won't find my name in the archive.) But I want you to have fun and be in your pleasure zone/comfort area as much as possible.

There's not much public in the rest of my journal (there isn't much here in general, I use it mostly for fandom and I'm crazy busy these last two years), but feel free to browse around.

Specifically this bit:
ROSE: Of course thess stories are acutually bullshit. They didn't happen in realaity. But thef act that they'rare bullshit makes them more inshresting.
ROSE: Men have crefted many stories that are bullshit out of symbols risen from the abyss of coinsciousness withou necesharily knowing whath e fuck they were doing or saying, as they flounered around for some truth.
ROSE: Bust in spite of themseleves they would for howefer briefly cross through a ray of light regarless. Becuss of the sbymbols. Dave.. The symbols hol dall the power.

JUNGIAN FANPERSONING
There's actually a ton in the opus as a whole; I wish I had time and better grounding in order to do a real discussion of it.  As it is, I don't have formal academic training in psychology beyond a few required courses and one clinical rotation, so I don't really think I'm qualified to analyse the entire corpus.  Someone could, you know, fund me to do so, though.

Ladystuck 2012 letter

First, a great thank you for doing Ladystuck. I know it can be rough trying to get into someone's head and write something they'll like while enjoying the writing yourself.   I want you to have fun and be in your pleasure zone/comfort area as much as possible.

Goodness, I adore the trolls.  I really do.  I know that makes me sound like a NuFan but I can read about humans in many more places.  What I especially love about Homestuck is that there's a giant world but I can read it in such a Jungian archetypical way.  I find that fascinating.  Details are symbols and it's so full of symbols and I adore that.

I find their solitary natures fascinating.   They are winners from their youth and now alone most of the time, devoted in many instances to their defined but isolated existences.  And yet, it's not all serious.  (Even Kanaya has her moments, especially early, when she's got her frivolous drinker books.)

Also huzzah for their implied inherent pansexuality.

Things I love:
Teaching, especially the experienced versus the innocent.
Blackrom is so fascinating.  Got to have both sides, though.
I love scenery and costumes and Weird Things and ritual, things that Must Be Done for undefined reasons.  I love to see the powerful crash, but I also love to see the subtle achieve power.  I adore it when people notice something they never did before, see a tiny corner, discover something, get in over their heads...

Things that really take me out of enjoyable reading: human slang for troll bodyparts, and wonky grammar.  I'm sorry, it's just jarring to me.

If you do write erotic-type content (Fade to black or get in and get soaked, it's all good):
I don't have a set headcanon for troll sexybits, just don't use human terms.  It just seems weird to me.

I enjoy some of the 'grey area' kinks, like questionable consent or non-con, sharp things, and blood play. I enjoy both physical and psychological aspects of D/s, but not lifestyle D/s fic. I have a massive religion/ritual kink, as you may guess from my handle.

Specific things I'm not into: vore, fur, feces, vomit. (Also, it's unlikely to come up in Homestuck, but pregnancy fic, no thank you, and anything identifiably 'medical kink' brings me right out, what with my IRL profession.)

Thank you again - have fun.

Psychology and Homestuck and hey I have icons now

I had a dream a while ago - before I read Homestuck, in fact, before I reunited with The Artist who suggested it to me - that had a view very much like this. When I got to Dave's part and the view of his home, his city, the firey sky, I was immediately struck by the view, by the similiarities. I remember the awe of recognition, the climbing esophageal tingle, and I caught my breath and just stared at it.

Being a Jungian I am often trying to unpack my dreams, the nature of things that appear coincidental, and reading Homestuck, I find it very, very Jungian. Archetypes, a mythology, transformative experiences, mandalas, quadrants/things in sets of four, the specifics of character development, and and so on, it's so packed I'm surprised people haven't talked about it this way. I suppose that's because psychoanalytic styles are quaint now; CBT's all the rage, insurance doesn't like to pay for long-term therapy. (I met a guy giving a talk over at, of all places, the law school at my university, who described himself as a Freudian. Now that seemed antique!)

Anyhow, this dream seemed very important to me. It was before I started my new graduate program, but I think after I was accepted. It was a building with three levels. On the bottom, people were running, like in gym class or for a weird 5k training program. They ran in practice along the bottom level, back and forth in corridors like a school. It was dim. On the second level were two men, one of whom was a priest. They were discussing loopholes for sexual activity within the priesthood. On the third level, except it was so high up I could see the rest of the city, and the view was this hot, hot summer sunset, a steelworking region's violent summer sunset, the same as Dave's view, this icon here. This room was a laboratory, and it was being cleaned by a fleet of Soviet-seeming cleaning women, in preparation to be used again.

Anyway, I nabbed some icons. I don't really feel the kids too much, but Dave's the closest, but his desolate world strikes some chord in me that I haven't fully discovered the source of yet. So it'll be my default icon for now, because it is recognizable but doesn't really speak too much to any one character. And that's how I like it - I don't want to subscribe to one character more than another, since the whole thing is a journey epic, one without a real main character, just focal points. The journey is the story. The images are there, and they're pulled from so much history I wish I had the time and knowledge to really dissect it.

Look who grew up and got sneaky

LOOK MORE POSTS ABOUT A REVITALIZED RELATIONSHIP. If you want out, just tell me. There's going to be some mild D/s discussion throughout these posts about her.

Back in 2005 we were both immature and didn't know what we wanted.
I made the big leap to say that I was here, I'd never left, and I found out she'd come into her own in a few ways after that.

It's a long story, only not, only it is, only it comes down to her admitting she missed me and me admitting I'd missed her control. Permission granted to indulge in it, again, because I have a lovely primary who understands, but doesn't really verbalize, his discomfort with power play. But I need a little.

So I asked her for an assignment. That gives her tons of leeway, and we could be creative together in a public or private way. Tonight I got it. And I am blown away by her creativity and memory and the upshot is that it actually forces me to work on my craft and won't just be indulgence. The last few years have been good for her, I think, even though there were strong challenges.

Also, I did a bizarre Tarot reading when thinking about it. I did five cards, in a one / three / one layout from top to bottom. The top I named 'where we were', the middle three 'what has changed' and the bottom 'outcome.' It came out thusly:
Six of Wands
Temperance - Tower (R) - The Devil
Four of Wands

That is some goddamn distribution.

Animus? dream

There he is, his head tilted down at me, greeting me with one of those soft smiles that makes his eyes crinkle and if I wasn't as much of a rationalist I'd say it was a blessing, and that my heart wanted to engulf him.

"You're here," I say. It's a stupid phrase, and no doubt he thinks so.

"I am." So quiet. It's a summer evening. My house sits on a small rise in marshland, and the shrill electric sound from the life in and around the creek nearly drowns out his voice.

"It's been..."

"Eight."

"Eight years."

He hands me a thin envelope. It is paler than him and unmarked. It feels like a card is inside. I don't want to look away to open it. If I look away he might disappear again. But he is looking at it and waiting for me, and he won't wait long.

Inside is a birthday card and a check from eight years ago. I tuck it back into the envelope and look up at him.

"I couldn't send it," he says. "Things were beginning to get complicated."

"I know."

We start to walk into the house. I am more tense than I would like to be. I want to pull him inside the room and keep him. The card has defused part of my desire - the more primitive section, and knowing him he could touch my skull and delineate where a surgeon could cut to take that part out. Higher order functions were still intact.

In the silence, he touches my shoulder. "I've always been with you."

Author of my fic:

AO3 is 502-ing constantly, so I'm putting my comment here.

Needless to say, this was a wonderment.

"Delicious author, what a delightful glimpse of that much-pursued evening - dare I say evenings? - you have given me. And Baudelaire is, without a doubt, a perfect pairing, sin and religion and forbidden erotic desires. The world has indeed tipped a little on its axis after this..."

Reading and Writing

Things I Did Not Need: A new fandom. A new one, the media of which I am 100% caught up on. (ETA: That would be the 2010 Sherlock, no need to be vague about it.)

Things I Still Need: Icon. Getting a bit ridiculous, actually. Wish I was still in touch with someone, not just for her artistic abilities, but yes, that'd be nice about now.

Yuletide Letter - EDITED

Dear Yuletide Santa (Santus?)
SPECIAL NOTE ADDED 11/21:
I was not sure at signup if you needed to work in all the characters requested. I'm not asking for that for Oglaf or EBZ. I think it speaks for themselves what combinations of those characters work or don't work together. More details added below.

Please enjoy writing. I wrote a lot down here, and a bit of it's rambly. All three of my requests have wiggle room in them, which is on purpose. Exploratory fiction is more interesting than very defined fiction.

Once upon a time I did an exchange where what I had to write, based on the narrative of the book the fandom was from, involved two characters who really only had about a week together. And the author accounted for almost every minute of that week, which left me about three 'in game' hours to write a scene. It felt rushed and boring and I vowed not to do that to someone myself.

That being said, there's definitely a thread of erotica present in my thoughts as I pinged these requests, although if that's not your cup of tea, there's absolutely room to do other things...now, to the cut-tag!

I had a dream about writing last night.

More specifically, I had a dream about a scene - a woman, slightly matronly, was going through the upper shelves on a tall desk. (I guess...like the kind that has a writing surface that folds out and often a cabinet to close up everything?) It was the desk of one of the students. A whiff of boarding school, specialty school, this one being an orphan? It was something about taking down the sketches the girl had made. But there was this undercurrent - like this was supposed to be something to write about, somehow.

choices in games and self.

I fucked up some personal things today (not in a major way, but I think one of them is a 'you get this one fuckup' sort of pass) so I'm feeling a little sorry for myself. I promised that tomorrow (er, today, now) would be a day of super-productivity, including a mandatory blast through paperwork and at least 1 hour of writing or sketching.

That aside, I have been playing the 'Choice of Games' series for some time now. I notice that it's pretty hard for me to play choices that are not comfortable for me - not uncomfortable, per se, but it's almost like work. For example, I haven't yet played someone who played along well with marrying for money in the social-climbing Romance game. I tried playing a total asshole in the vampire game but definitely didn't pick the most extreme of some of the answers. It's interesting, what I will and won't do, like somehow it's being kept track of and reflects on me.
